Scott Spielman leads the emerging technologies group at Ecotope with nearly a decade’s experience in product development, mechanical engineering, data analyses, and energy modeling. He now manages a team of engineers and data analysts to take bring new products to market to drive towards a greener economy. In this role he executes studies to assess new technologies, test product before demonstration projects, and designs demonstration projects with measurement and verification to assess new technologies. Ecotope’s emerging technologies team has played a key role market transformation towards central heat pump water heaters (HPWH). Scott has played a key role in defining how grid-interactivity can be included in central HPWH designs.

Continued progress toward the electrification of the built environment creates both a massive challenge and an opportunity for eliminating carbon emissions. The challenge of new loads from electrification on the utility system requires enhanced abilities for shifting, shedding, and modulating those loads to the mutual benefit of the building owner and serving utility. The effort to scale grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs) is well underway. What are the risks to all parties in getting this wrong?
